Common Storm Damage Signs

Wind damage, hail damage, debris impact, and water intrusion are some of the most common forms of storm damage we see across the Detroit metro area.

After a storm, you might notice missing or torn shingles, dented gutters, damaged flashing, debris on the roof, or water stains inside the home. Sometimes the signs are obvious. Sometimes they’re not. Granule loss, loosened shingles, and minor damage around roof penetrations can go unnoticed until the next heavy rain exposes the problem.

When you’re walking around the property after a storm, here are a few things to look for:

  • Missing and torn shingles
  • Roof leaks
  • Interior water stains

Not every damaged roof starts leaking right away. We’ve inspected plenty of roofs that looked fine from the ground but had storm damage hiding in a few key areas. Some problems don’t show themselves until the next round of heavy rain, high winds, or severe weather moves through.

Insurance Claims And Storm Damage

Storm damage often raises two questions: How bad is it, and will insurance cover it?

In many cases, the answer is yes. Most policies cover storm damage roof repair when the damage comes from a sudden weather event rather than age, neglect, or normal wear.

If you’re considering an insurance claim:

  • Take photos of visible roof damage and damaged areas.
  • Contact your insurance company promptly.
  • Schedule a professional inspection.
  • Keep records of any damage, repairs, or communication.

Our roofing specialists provide detailed documentation and insurance claim assistance that may help support conversations with your insurance company and insurance adjuster.

The insurance claim process typically depends on how quickly the insurance company can schedule an insurance adjuster and review the property.

What To Do After A Storm

First things first: stay off the roof.

Seriously. We know the temptation. A storm rolls through and the first thing people want to do is climb a ladder and see what happened.

Don’t.

Wet shingles, loose materials, and hidden damage can turn into a bad day in a hurry.

Walk around the house instead. Look for shingles in the yard, dents in the gutters, fallen branches, or water stains inside the home.

If something doesn’t look right, give us a call. We’d rather catch a small problem now than have you discover a leak during the next heavy rain.

Take photos of shingles, gutters, fallen trees, debris, siding damage, or anything else that appears affected by the storm.

Starting the process early often makes communication easier if repairs are needed later.

A thorough roof inspection can identify hidden damage that may not be visible from the ground.

Roof Repair Or A New Roof?

Some roofs need a few targeted repairs. Others have enough damage that replacement becomes the better long-term solution. The inspection helps determine which approach makes the most sense based on the roof’s condition, the extent of the storm damage, and the scope of the necessary repairs.

Roof Repair

Many roofs can be restored without a full replacement.

Storm damage repair may include missing shingle replacement, roof leak repairs, flashing repairs, gutter repairs, and structural repairs when needed. Some roofs only need localized repairs, while others require work across multiple sections after a severe storm.

The goal is to restore the roof and prevent further damage before future storms create larger problems.

Roof Replacement

Not every storm damage roof needs a full replacement. However, severe weather can sometimes leave behind widespread roof damage, structural damage, multiple leaks, or extensive damage across large sections of the roofing system.

When repairs become extensive or the damage affects the roof as a whole, a roof replacement may provide the better long-term solution.

Why Homeowners Call Billy’s Roofing

We’ve been doing this since 1988. Most people call us because they’re not sure how bad the damage is or whether insurance is involved. We inspect the roof, take photos, and show you what we found. Sometimes it’s a simple repair. Sometimes it’s more than that. Either way, you’ll know what you’re dealing with before making a decision.

Whether you’re dealing with hail damage, wind damage, fallen trees, damaged gutters, asphalt shingles that have been lifted by wind, or a storm damage roof after extreme weather, we’ll provide clear answers and a free estimate.

We also offer financing options for qualifying projects when larger repairs or a roof replacement can’t wait.

Schedule An Inspection

Storm damage rarely improves with time.

If your roof, gutters, or property may have been affected by a recent storm, schedule a professional inspection before small leaks, water damage, mold growth, or structural issues become larger problems.

Billy’s Roofing provides storm damage roof repair, roof inspections, and storm damage repair services throughout Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan.

Storm Roof Repair FAQs

Here are a few common questions homeowners ask after severe weather, high winds, hail, or visible roof damage.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Storm Damage Roof Repair?
A lot of the time, yes. If the damage was caused by a storm, wind event, or hail, insurance may help cover the repairs. Every policy is different, though. That’s why we document what we find and let the insurance company determine coverage.
Sooner is usually better. Missing shingles and small leaks have a way of becoming bigger problems if they’re left alone. An inspection also helps document the damage while everything is still fresh.
Absolutely. We often find dents in gutters, flashing, skylights, and other parts of the exterior after a hailstorm. Sometimes the roof isn’t the only thing that took a hit.
Surprisingly no, many don’t. We repair plenty of roofs every year after storms. The question is whether the damage is isolated to a few areas or spread across the roof. That’s what we’re looking for during the inspection.
